I have been working abroad for several years. Before my first mission for an International NGO I tried to prepare myself thoroughly. I was informed about the political situation and the history of the country. Furthermore I have read books about cultural characteristics, and the Do's and Dont's. Regardless, I realized very quickly that I struggled in social interactions. Additionally, I was less confident with my work as a psychologist.
I decided to forget everything I have read in books about cultural specifics and to find my own way. I explored my own cultural imprint and how it effects my social interactions. It helped me to understand difficulties and misunderstandings better. After a while, it was easier for me to interact in different cultures and to enjoy working in international teams. Missions in India, Pakistan, Lybia, Nigeria and the Russian Federation expanded my knowledge and experiences.
Every time when I returned from a mission, I realized that it was not easy to adjust to my "own culture". After working abroad for 7 years, I had to re-adjust and to figure out how I can integrate all my experiences in my work in my homecountry. Coaching helped my to find my goals and to realize them.
Currently, I work at different universities as lecturer with the goal to increase cultural competence amongst psychology students for their future work as counsellors and psychotherapists.
As coach I support clients who work in international teams or have the intention to work abroad. Furthermore, I coach people who returned to their home countries regarding new goals and life changes.
